RM2GFNH82–Bronze cnemides (greave armour) depicting heads of Pan, Silenus, a Maenad, cornucopias and a stork fighting a snake - Pompeii gladiatorial barracks, 1st century AD - The greaves that protected the leg below the knee were known as cnemides and were a typical part of the armour of the Tracian (Thraex) and the hoplomachus, the only gladiators who had protection for both legs. The elegant relief decoration suggests that these protective devices were worn mainly during the parade held to mark the opening of the shows and not during the shows themselves.
