In the days of old, soldiers continued to serve even after they had died on the battlefield. They served by having their teeth pulled out. This was before dentures were invented.

Body-snatchers would march onto the battlefields and pull out the teeth of the fallen, returning home with bags full of teeth to be sold to dentists at high prices.
