A recent report states that the studio behind 2019’s Days Gone is working on a new game, but it is unlikely that it will be a sequel. Bend Studio, the Oregon based developer most famous for its open world Days Gone game and its work on Uncharted: Golden Abyss, now appears to be working on something new, while distancing itself from Sony.

When Days Gone released in 2019 as a PlayStation 4 exclusive, it was met with lukewarm-to-average reviews. While many enjoyed the open world map and Freaker (not Zombie) killing rampages available to them, others found the lack of solid story to ground the whole experience a let-down. Regardless, Days Gone did make a profit, and the title was recently announced to be coming to PC as well, as part of Sony’s shift towards making its exclusive titles available to a wider audience.

It has been reported that Bend Studios had actually pitched a sequel for Days Gone to Sony the same year of its release. The game did, after all, conclude with several loose ends that lent themselves to a follow up. Sadly for fans of Days Gone, however, this sequel does not seem likely. According to a new report from Bloomberg, the pitch was turned down as “(Days Gone’s) development had been lengthy and critical reception was mixed, so a Days Gone 2 wasn’t seen as a viable option.” The same report goes on to say that Bend Studios was subsequently divided into two teams. One team went to work on a new multiplayer game with Naughty Dog and one team “was assigned to work on a new Uncharted game with supervision from Naughty Dog.

These changes left a bitter taste in the mouths of many at Bend Studios, resulting in several members of the team leaving their assigned projects. According to the Bloomberg report, Bend’s developers “feared they might be absorbed into Naughty Dog” and as such they requested to be removed from the production of the Uncharted job. Now, the team is said to be working on a new game of their own, but what this game may be remains a mystery.

Bloomberg’s report has sent shockwaves through the gaming industry this morning. Along with the news that Bend Studios has had their relationship somewhat tarred with Sony, there are also reports of Sony repeatedly favoring bigger companies (such as Naughty Dog) over smaller but equally-able teams. It is stated that others have had a similar experience to Bend Studio, and that Sony did not acknowledge their existence or provide the necessary funding to support a game’s vision. Sony has not released a statement about this report as of the time of this writing.

While the future of Days Gone appears to be non-existent, it will be interesting to see what Bend Studio decides to do next. Until that time, however, players will soon be able to experience Days Gone again on PC, along with other former PlayStation 4 exclusives such as Horizon Zero Dawn.
