Toshiyuki Kita
The “Wink” chair, which has an organic form and whose parts can be moved to follow the movements of the human body, was immediately popular in Italy, spreading the name of Toshiyuki Kita throughout the world. The Aquos C-1, released in 2001, proposed a new form of television and at the same time influenced the lifestyle of a new era. Kita’s designs, overflowing with free sensitivity, have values that transcend national borders and are recognized not only in Japan but also around the world.

While creating new designs that foresee the times, Kita also respects the power of traditional Japanese craftsmanship, and his “Tako,” which uses Mino washi paper, was a big hit in Europe and elsewhere as a lighting fixture that made good use of the strength and characteristics of washi, appealing to the world about the excellence of washi. Kita proposes designs for the preservation of traditional crafts so that they can be used permanently in modern life without feeling out of place. In recent years, the use of materials rooted in the local community has also become a major theme in Kita’s designs as part of its efforts to contribute to a sustainable society.
