Management at the Glasgow School of Art cannot be allowed to oversee any rebuilding of the burnt-out Mackintosh building alone, MSPs will be told at Holyrood hearings into the future of the ruined masterpiece.

Speaking before a parliamentary inquiry to be held this month, Stuart Robertson, director of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society, suggested an expert panel should have oversight. It follows June’s second devastating blaze in four years, after - as The Sunday Times revealed - sprinklers had been fitted but were not operational.

“The art school is primarily about teaching of the arts,” said Robertson. “They are not really a conservation body, and it’s a big, big project to take it on.”
