What was James' cause of death?
On December 17, 2023, 65-year-old James lost his battle with multiple myeloma and died.
Multiple myeloma is a type of cancer that forms in the plasma cell and builds up in the bone marrow.
In a statement to TMZ, his rep announced: "One of Dick Wolf's proteges, McCaffrey went on to a successful 35-year career in television and film.
"Trained at the Actor's Studio, he never lost his love for creating characters.

James is survived by Rochelle and their daughter Tiernan.
How long did James voice Max Payne?
For 11 years, James voiced the video game character Max Payne.
In the gaming franchise of the same name, he voiced the titular character for three installments.
In Max Payne 3, he also did the motion capture for the protagonist.
"Max is a real character who changes and grows, and I think that’s why a lot of people like him," he said of the franchise's popularity.
James told Videogamer: "In the first two games, it was mostly just me standing in a sound booth taking directions.
