Max Payne star James McCaffrey dies aged 65 as Kevin Dillon leads tributes

James McCaffrey, who is most famous for providing the voice for Max Payne in the video game series, has sadly passed away at the age of 65 after being diagnosed with cancer

Max Payne star James McCaffrey has sadly passed away at 65 after a battle with cancer.

A representative confirmed to TMZ that he died on Sunday from multiple myeloma, a cancer affecting white blood cells.

A spokesperson on behalf of the family stated: "One of Dick Wolf's proteges, McCaffrey went on to a successful 35 year career in television and film. Trained at the Actor's Studio, he never lost his love for creating characters; however, his good looks often pushed him toward leading man roles."

Most known for providing Max Payne's voice in the video game series, James also made an appearance as an FBI agent in the movie adaptation.

His other video gaming credits include voices for Thomas Zane and Alex Casey in the Alex Wake series.

In addition to gaming, McCaffrey was known for his role as Jimmy Keefe in the FX show Rescue Me, appearing in 56 episodes from 2004 to 2011.

His TV resume also lists Law and Order: SVU, Blue Bloods, She's Gotta Have It, As the World Turns, Sex in the City, and Meghan Markle's popular show Suits.

He leaves behind his wife, Rochelle Bostrom, and daughter Tiernan in Larchmont, New York.

Kevin Dillon, the actor known from Entourage, posted a heartfelt message online for his close buddy. Sharing a snap of them wearing smart suits, he said: "#rip James McCaffrey we were lucky to have known you. My best friend you will be missed."

On social media, fans also poured out their farewells for the actor. One admirer tweeted: "James McCaffrey, along with Sam Lake, brought Max Payne to life like no one else could," and reflected on how "McCaffrey's voice and Lake's writing perfectly encapsulated the eternal struggle Max was dealt.

"James was one of the best VAs in the industry and it's incredibly saddening to see him gone."

Another tweeter expressed, "RIP to a godd**n legend," adding that "James McCaffrey has one of the most instantly recognizable voices in media and he could [breathe] so much life into his roles.

"I am genuinely heartbroken we won't get to hear his voice in more new games or mediums."
