Read on to know what makes Danish designer Verner Panton's lighting pieces one of the most sought-after luminaires ever

Verner Panton was ahead of his time. The Danish designer reinterpreted furniture, creating chairs and luminaires in highly-expressive forms never seen before.

From 1950 to 1952, Panton worked for Danish architect and designer, Arne Jacobsen. But after working for his firm, Panton founded an independent studio in 1955. He then began thinking up fresh and new creations.

"He brought pop-art ideas into the furniture realm," Industrial Design professor, Volker Albus once related in an interview for DW News.

While he is best known for the Panton Chair, a design that Panton developed with Vitra in the 1960s (and later released in 1967), the designer also busied himself with lighting design.

Unlike his contemporaries who were working with classic materials during his time, Panton was experimenting with other colours, shapes, and light.

Today, a few of his luminaires remain well-loved across the world. Browse below to learn more about his pieces:

In 1960, he crafted the Moon Lamp, a lighting piece that provided soft illumination, creating a cosy ambience in any area.

The lamp's bulb, which is placed at the centre, is framed by several suspended large ring-shaped white discs. Although the fan-shaped discs hide the bulb, it reflects the light, allowing it to softly spread throughout the room.

The Flowerpot VP3 has a silhouette that is reminiscent of Panton's distinct style as seen in his series of creations. One telling quality is the geometrical patterns such as the spheres. This table lamp, however, is created with two hemispheres joined together, symbolising harmony. Like all Panton designs, the lamp softly scatters light. It is a design that appeals even to the modern generation.

This piece was immediately loved when it launched in 1969, the Flower Power era of the late 60s, because of its futuristic form.

In 1971, Panton collaborated with Louis Poulsen to create what became one of the most iconic lighting pieces ever—the Panthella. Panton drew inspiration from his Mirror Wall Lamp in the process of creating the Panthella.

The first trumpet-shaped lamp was produced in the grey opal finish. Recently, Louis Poulsen reintroduced the original colour with an acrylic shade.

A year before Panton was awarded Germany’s ‘Deutsche Auswahl' award five times from 1981 to 1984, the Danish designer created Pantop. The shade has a bell-like form facing down while mounted with the aperture.

The Pantop Portable, a modern version of the Pantop, was released to allow anyone to take the light with them anywhere they go. It has the same flared shade and features a three-stage dimmer that allows one to adjust the light level.

Each of these lighting fixtures has a timeless and elegant facade, making it one of the most sought-after designs by Panton up until today.
