How Ryan Gosling & Eva Mendes Reportedly Navigated ‘Challenges’ Amid His Barbie Success

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes’ private, barely-seen relationship has helped make them one of the beloved and down-to-earth couples in Hollywood but that doesn’t mean they haven’t faced problems just like us regular folk!

Sources are revealing hidden details about Mendes and Gosling’s relationship in a new Us Weekly cover story and it looks like they’ve become experts at navigating the “challenges” that their hectic lives throw at them.

“Like any couple, they have some challenges to navigate,” says one source, addressing how the couple deals with Gosling, 43, being away filming and promoting Barbie and his upcoming projects, “but they work through these things fairly seamlessly.”

Another source claims that Mendes, 49, who confirmed that she secretly married Gosling after years of speculation in 2022, occasionally finds it difficult when Gosling is away for long periods of time while she stays home with their two daughters, Esmeralda, 9, and Amada, 7. The couple reportedly don’t employ a lot of staff, meaning Mendes often has to lean on family members for help while Gosling is working. “They are trying to keep their daughters’ lives as normal as possible and don’t want them growing up in Hollywood,” one source explains.

That said, the couple clearly have their routine down. A source notes that Gosling took a major break before filming Barbie after a slew of successful films including The Nice GuysLa La LandBlade Runner 2049 and First Man. The source explains: “Ryan tends to work in big spurts, then takes time off so he can come back to the next challenge with a full tank.”

Mendes has been on an acting hiatus since appearing in Gosling’s directorial debut, Lost River, and has instead been focused on business ventures including her own fashion line, a beauty brand CIRCA, and Skura Sponge, which she co-owns and launched in 2022. She is also releasing a children’s book in September 2024. “My latest project is a true labor of love,” she announced on Instagram on February 22. “Being the Mami to my two little girls has inspired me to write my first picture book.”

According the Us Weekly’s sources, Gosling is Mendes’ biggest supporter when it comes to her businesses. “When Eva travels, Ryan is more than happy to stay home,” says one source while another added, “Ryan always encourages Eva to pursue the projects she believes in and gladly steps up to the plate to take care of the kids whenever she needs.”

Gosling, who started dating Mendes when they co-starred in their 2012 film The Places Beyond The Pines, has made sure to shout out his partner in his 2017 Golden Globes speech after winning a Best Actor award for his role in La La Land.

“While I was singing and dancing and playing piano and having the best experience I ever had, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second and helping her brother battle cancer,” Gosling said in his speech. “If she hadn’t have done that, if she hadn’t taken all of that on so that I could have this experience, it would surely be someone else other than me up here today. So, sweetheart, thank you. To my daughters, Amada and Esmerelda, I love you. And if I may, I’d like to dedicate this to the memory of her brother, Juan Carlos Mendes.”
