What does a burned blu-ray look like?

Hi all,

At work, we have need to be able to tell a burned DVD from a stamped one, and to tell a burned blu-ray disc from a stamped one. The DVDs are usually easy, the back of a burned DVD has a bluish cast.

Is there a way to tell a burned blu-ray from a stamped commercial blu-ray disc? I have one disc at my desk that i suspect is a burned blu-ray, and it is rather brownish on the back side. Is that a consistent sign? We haven't gotten many burned blu-rays but i think we will be seeing more of them. I've googled around but i haven't found any description of what a burned blu-ray looks like as a physical object.

I suspect this is not the only answer, but...

I got out the manufactured on demand The Ghost That Never Returns. The burned side is a general eggplant purple-brown, with a clear difference between the area that is burned and what is not:



Both the banding and the darker color are easy to distinguish from a standard disc with its silver color (maybe ever so slightly pinkish, or that could just be the light) and lack of a clear banding.

Thanks, Mike, mine looks similar. Here is a picture that i took of two discs side by side. The burned DVD, on the left, is also The Ghost that Never Returns, identified as a Blu-Ray MOD edition from Flicker Alley. On the right is the stamped disc, De mille's The Captive, from Olive. The color looks a little different depending on what angle you are looking. .
The perpendicular lines are not on the discs, they are a reflection of the ceiling.

It is obvious that the left one is a BD-R by the blank area which would not be like that if the same disc was replicated. One issuer of silents, mainly, has done some BD-Rs. I just got two. One was fine and played without a hitch(early US DVD-Rs and some of the first FOX BDs were troublesome and unplayable on my machines at the time), The other had a large clear area from the label out, which was unusual to see such, and it tried to play but would not. I stuck it in the Computer and I was able to rip the program to HDD and made a DVD-R cut down. It worked without a hitch. I placed the DVD-R in a sleeve and put in the case with the errant BD-R.

I haven't been game, yet, to have a go at making BD-Rs yet.

Getting away from the discs, the BD cases are an interesting item. I get many Blu Rays from USA(I live in Australia) and some times I get a damaged case that needs replacing. The local Blu Ray cases are plentiful for single or multiple discs and would come from China. USA slicks are a dimension too big for these local cases. I won't be cutting the slicks, though. Never had this trouble with DVD cases.
