After high school, Bertoia enrolled at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. There, he studied under the renowned designer and architect Eliel Saarinen and his son, Eero Saarinen. Bertoia's time at Cranbrook proved to be influential in shaping his artistic vision and design philosophy.

In the early 1940s, Bertoia moved to California to work with Charles and Ray Eames at the Evans Products Company. During his time there, he honed his skills in furniture design and experimented with new materials and techniques. In 1950, Bertoia moved to Pennsylvania to work with Hans and Florence Knoll at the Knoll furniture company.
