Harry Bertoia for Knoll 'Bird' Lounge Chair with Ottoman in Welded Steel

Sale price$4,400.00

Harry Bertoia for Knoll, 'bird' easy chair with ottoman, lacquered welded steel, United States, design 1952, later production

This Bird armchair with ottoman is a design by Harry Bertoia from 1952. Executed in black lacquered welded steel, this chair features an intricate interlacing of steel wires, resulting in a linear grill effect. This woven steel mesh imbues the chair and ottoman with a lightweight quality, rendering them eminently suitable for both indoor and outdoor settings. The airy, breathable quality of the metal mesh renders the chair and footstool particularly suited for summertime relaxation.
Knoll International was founded in New York by the 26-year-old German Hans Knoll (1914-1955) in 1938. Hans' father, Walter Knoll, was a true modernist and furniture manufacturer who had a reputation for quality. When Hans Knoll died at a young age his wife Florence Knoll took over and under her influence the company flourished and created its best designs. She designed and led the company where she cooperated with talented designers such as Eero Saarinen, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Richard Schultz and Harry Bertoia.
