The voice of video game character Max Payne, James McCaffrey has died at age 65, according to reports.

A representative for the actor told TMZ that James passed away on Sunday. He reportedly had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer affecting white blood cells.

His rep told the outlet: "One of Dick Wolf's proteges ("Swift Justice"), McCaffrey went on to a successful 35 year career in television and film. Trained at the Actor's Studio, he never lost his love for creating characters; however, his good looks often pushed him toward leading man roles."

James is best known for voicing Max Payne in the three installments of the video game series. He also had a cameo in the film adaption of the game, playing an FBI agent assigned to capture Max.

Other video game roles include Thomas Zane in Alex Wake and Alex Casey in the sequel, Alex Wake 2 which came out earlier this year. He also had a recurring role in the FX show Rescue Me, portraying Jimmy Keefe for 56 episodes between 2004 and 2011.

Other TV shows on his resume include Law & Order: SVU, Blue Bloods, She's Gotta Have It, As the World Turns, Sex in the City, and Meghan Markle's famed Suits. He also owned a home in Larchmont, New York, and is survived by his wife, Rochelle Bostrom, and daughter Tiernan.

Fans paid tribute to the actor on social media

Kevin Dillon, star of Entourage, posted a tribute to his friend on Instagram. Posting a photo of the two of them in suits,

: "#rip James McCaffrey we were lucky to have known you. My best friend you will be missed."

Fans also shared tributes to the actor on social media. "James McCaffrey, along with Sam Lake, brought Max Payne to life like no one else could," wrote one fan on Twitter, "McCaffrey’s voice and Lake’s writing perfectly encapsulated the eternal struggle Max was dealt. James was one of the best VA’s in the industry and it’s incredibly saddening to see him gone."

"RIP to a godd**n legend," another wrote, "James McCaffrey has one of the most instantly recognisable voices in media and he could [breathe] so much life into his roles. I am genuinely heartbroken we won't get to hear his voice in more new games or mediums."
