A shoppable scheme inspired by the Vienna Secession movement
Turn-of-the-century Vienna played host to some of the most influential cultural movements of the 20th century; it saw the birth of psychoanalysis, the roots of modernist design, burgeoning movements in feminism and socialism, and an Austrian equivalent to the Arts & Crafts movement in the UK – the Vienna Secession. Formed in 1897 by a group of Austrian artists, sculptors and architects that included Josef Hoffman, Koloman Moser, Otto Wagner and Gustav Klimt, the 'Secession' referred to the group's mass resignation from the Association of Austrian artists in protest against its support for the more traditional styles. The designs and colours favoured by the movement feel particularly of the moment more than a century later, and our decoration editor has dreamed up decoration schemes that capture its bold, rebellious spirit.
