Obituary: Arianne Caoili

It is with great sorrow that we bring news of the passing of Arianne Caoili, 2019 EMPA Graduate, on 30 March 2020, following a car accident on 14 March in Yerevan, where she lived. Arianne was 33 years old.

We are all deeply shocked by this tragic loss. So many of us vividly remember Arianne’s energy, intelligence, and warmth.

Arianne was a former Economic Advisor to the President of Armenia and Advisor to the Prime Minister. She was also the owner and Editor-in-Chief of Champord Tert, the only free, mass-distributed newspaper in the Caucasus region. Arianne also served as Chairwoman of the Board of the Champord Fund, an organisation invested in the training of young Armenian journalists.

In addition to her professional life, Arianne was a seven-time Chess Olympiad representative, the former girls world rapid chess champion, and a FIDE International Master of Chess. She had previously studied Commerce and Political Science at the Australian National University and the EBS Business School in Germany.

Our thoughts are with Arianne’s husband, Levon Aronian, and her family and friends.
