A New Jimi Hendrix Album Is Coming This Fall

Following

Fans of the legendary guitarist, singer and songwriter Jimi Hendrix have reason to be excited, as a new album from the rocker has been set for later this fall.

Legacy Recordings has announced the upcoming release of Jimi Hendrix Experience: Hollywood Bowl August 18, 1967, an aptly-named live recording from the celebrated guitar player and his band. The full-length is expected to be released on November 10.

The new album contains a two-track live recording that has never been officially released. The recording features several future favorites like "Purple Haze," "Fire," and "Foxey Lady," among others. In addition to his own work, Hendrix also pays homage to some of his most cherished musical influences on the recording, including The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters.

In anticipation of the full-length’s launch, the set’s first track, "Killing Floor," has been shared for all to hear.

The concert, which has been meticulously preserved for over half a century, captures an electrifying performance by the Jimi Hendrix Experience before many people knew who they were. These types of live albums are often released from recordings taken after a name ascended the charts and while they were in their prime, but die-hard fans want to hear everything from their favorites.

Jimi Hendrix Experience: Hollywood Bowl August 18, 1967 was recorded less than a week before the release of their debut album, Are You Experienced, which is widely regarded as a classic rock album and one of Hendrix’s best works.

According to the album's description, which was shared on Instagram by Hendrix’s official page, the 1967 Hollywood Bowl concert is “notable for being one of the last times the band performed in front of an audience as relative unknowns.”

Comprising the iconic trio of Jimi Hendrix on guitar and vocals, Noel Redding on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums, the Jimi Hendrix Experience shared the billing that night with headliners The Mamas & The Papas, who were the bigger stars at the time.

Accompanying the album is a new short documentary titled Monterey Pop to the Hollywood Bowl. This film delves into Hendrix's travels from Europe to the U.S., where the concert immortalized on this album took place. The movie includes interviews with several high-profile figures and musicians from the time, including Michelle Phillips of The Mamas & The Papas and Brian Ray, who is best known as Paul McCartney's longtime guitarist.
