Eva Mendes has been a vocal supporter of her longtime partner, Ryan Gosling, on social media throughout his awards season run for Barbie. She has not attended any events with him, though. Tonight’s Oscars were no exception...at least on the red carpet. Gosling arrived to the show with his sister, Mandi Gosling, instead.

Mendes shared a video of herself dressed casually backstage, writing, “Always by my man.”

Mendes explained on Instagram last year that there is a reason she does not attend red carpet events with Gosling. She had posted footage of the two of them in 2011’s The Place Beyond the Pines, writing, “Magic is Real. We did not meet on set. The magic started way before, but here’s a little magic captured on camera.”

A fan commented on the post, saying, “Eva, I want to be honest w u, but I hope Barbie will get through the Awards Season just to see you w Ryan. I know I’m selfish and probably a dreamer, but I will never stop to dream about it!!”

Mendes responded, “You’re the best! What a cool comment; thank you. But we don’t do those things together...Like these photos I’ve been posting, I’m only comfortable posting because it’s already out there.” She added in a second comment, “Oh wait -for those who may catch me in a ‘lie’ -we only were on the red carpet together once when promoting this film.”

Still, Mendes has openly cheered on Gosling from afar, long before tonight. When his Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor was announced in late January, Mendes shared a post on Instagram applauding him. “So proud of my man,” she wrote. “So much hate when he took on this role. So many people trying to shame him for doing it. Despite all the #Notmyken ridicule and articles written about him, he created this completely original, hilarious, heartbreaking, now iconic character and took it all the way to Oscars. So beyond proud to be this Ken’s Barbie 💕”
