A "Kassette" or "Holzkastel", Hilde Jesser-Schmid (?) or Irene Schaschl-Schuster, Wiener Werkstätte, 1916/18 - Jugendstil and 20th Century Arts and Crafts

wooden case with two doors and a metal lock with original key; casket polychrome painted all around; divided into four fields; depictions of costumed and symbolic women and men, arrangements of flowers; four conical feet carved with vertical grooves; interior with three drawers (two at top and one below), both the latter and inner sides of the doors lined with ivory-coloured silk fabric; the exterior with extensive floral embroideries in gold paint and ivory colour; each drawer each with pull flap (the latter partly loose and sewn at a later date); the inside of the drawers lined with ivory-coloured silk fabric; the inner outline of drawers gilt and decorated with delicate carvings featuring foliate ornaments; small sections of the wooden casket missing, wood scuffed and with small losses to the painted decor; signs of age and use; height 35.1 cm, length 40.4 cm, depth 20.2 cm.
