Mackenzie Foy has landed the lead role in Disney's live-action version of The Nutcracker.

The young actress, who played Matthew McConaughey's daughter in Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, will star as Clara in The Nutcracker and the Four Kings.

The Lasse Hallström film is based on ETA Hoffmann's 1816 story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, and follows the young girl as she is entrusted with a Nutcracker doll.

The Christmas toy comes to life and helps defeat the evil mouse king, taking Clara to a magical world inhabited by dolls.

It was notably turned into the iconic ballet by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1892.

Disney also previously used parts of The Nutcracker for 1940 animated classic Fantasia.

Ashleigh Powell is penning the script for the Disney version, with Mark Gordon producing and Lindy Goldstein executive producing.

It's eyeing a production start this autumn.
