McDonald's have changed the recipe for two of its most iconic burgers: here's what you need to know

McDonald's have announced permanent changes to two of their most popular menu items - and it's effective immediately.

The iconic cheeseburger and Big Mac will taste a little different, after the fast food chain decided to ditch the old cooking methods and 'change the cheese'.

The recipe tweaks were first tested at selected stores in Australia, Belgium and Canada before being implemented there in 2019. In April the chain announced the changes would be rolled out across the US by 2024.

A McDonald's spokesperson said: 'Customers will also be pleased to know more Big Mac sauce is added to each burger for extra tangy sweetness with every bite.'

But McDonald's fans have been against the 'tweaks' to restaurant favourites before, sparking an outrage - and this time is no different.

'I am not looking for a change in my McDonald's,' one American man said online.

With another customer claiming: 'The cheesy and Big Mac are fine, leave them alone.' 

'No thanks. I prefer to make my food at home so I decide what to put in it,' a third added.  

Another didn't hold back to call the onions 'trash' and others expressed concerns of price increases for 'basically the same product'. 

Customers in Australia, Canada and Belgium gave  'rave reviews' leading to the US rollout.

The fast food chain confirmed the buns are now 'softer' and 'pillowy' and white onions is added to the patties during the grilling process for a more 'juicer, caramelised' flavour. 

Along with this, changes have been made to the burger assembly process to ensure the cheese slices are 'perfectly melted' every time.

Chef Chad Schafer, Senior Director of Culinary Innovation, of McDonald's USA said: 'I'll always remember my first burger from McDonald's. 

'And now my culinary team and I have the best job in the world - thinking about ways to bring even more of that iconic McDonald's taste to fans.

'We found that small changes, like tweaking our process to get hotter, meltier cheese and adjusting our grill settings for a better sear, added up to a big difference in making our burgers more flavorful than ever.'

And this isn't the first time McDonald's have made controversial changes to their menu items.

Earlier this year two menu options were removed in Australia to make way for four new offerings. 

From April 19, limited-edition McCafé options became available across all restaurants nationally.

Customers can now get their hands on a BBQ, Bacon and Cheese Toastie, Banana and Blueberry Loaf, Apple and Cinnamon Muffin and Double Choc Muffin. 

But unfortunately the Mud Muffin and Blueberry Muffin are no longer available.  

Daily Mail Australia understands the Apple and Cinnamon Muffin replaced the Blueberry Muffin, and the Double Choc Muffin replaced the Mud Muffin. 

Both the BBQ, Bacon and Cheese Toastie and Banana and Blueberry Loaf will only be available for the next six months. 

A McDonald's spokesperson previously told FEMAIL the fast food chain is thrilled to introduce the new menu items. 

'We're excited to see what customers think of the delicious new additions to our McCafé menu,' the spokesperson said.
