Contains major spoilers for The Tourist

After two years away, The Tourist has finally returned on BBC One and BBC iPlayer for an epic season two, starring Jamie Dornan and Danielle Macdonald as Elliot Stanley and Helen Chambers.

In the new series the pair travel to Ireland, after Elliot is sent a letter from someone from his past, in the hopes they can uncover more about who Elliot really is. But less than a few hours after being in Ireland, Elliot is kidnapped, a feuding family war is revealed and the former life Elliot once led is uncovered.

The first episode dropped on BBC One on 1st January, with the following five episodes all uploaded onto BBC iPlayer, and as we have no patience, we of course had to bingewatch the entire season in one sitting.

The series is packed with shocking revelations, violent scenes and touching moments, and a final episode that will leave you with a few questions. So if like us you're still a little confused over the season finale of The Tourist series two then this is everything you need to know about the final episode.

What happens in the final episode of The Tourist season 2?

The final episode of The Tourist opens with Helen visiting Elliot/Eugene at the Garda station, where she tells him his prints where found all over the gun that killed Donal McDonnell (Diarmaid Murtagh). Despite saying she loves him Helen makes it clear she can't be caught up in Eugene's world anymore and leaves.

Elsewhere Frank (Francis Magee) is talking to Fergel (Mark McKenna) about Eugene and Donal, and tries to talk him into seeking revenge on Donal's behalf and agreeing (sort of) to kill Eugene.

Eugene is weirdly released from the Garda and all is explained when he is greeted by his mother Niamh (Olwen Fouéré) outside the station who reveals Frank arranged for Eugene to be released so he can be killed. Charming.

While speaking to his mum about the ongoing family feud, Eugene reveals why he thinks he ran away from Ireland in the first place, and it was because of the guilt he suffered over the death of his brother who was killed by Donal.

Helen heads to the airport where she runs into Ethan (Greg Larsen) and Detective Ruairi (Conor MacNeill) who are now besties and off to Budapest. Ruairi lets slip Eugene has been released and is now a target for Frank. Despite herself, Helen then asks Ruairi for his help.

Eugene meets up with Fergal (who is determined to get a chicken baguette with hot space) who asks to help him hide from Frank, as he's not going to do what he wants.

Helen, Ruairi and Ethan travel to meet up with Elliot Stanley's widow, who tells them about the taxi that took Niamh on the way back from the diving wreck with Elliot.

Eugene and Fergal get stuck in an intense car chase with Frank's cronies that leads their car to literally go off the edge of the cliff but they manage to survive as they undid their seat belts and jumped out of the car before it went off the edge.

The unlikely trio head to the cab company where they dig through a load of old files to find the exact location off where Niamh was dropped off years ago.

Eugene and Fergal head to Cassidy pub where Niamh gives them less than a warm welcome and makes him reveal the contents of his bag, which contains a bunch of normal stuff and a gun of course.

It all starts to heat up as Helen, Ruairi and Ethan head to the drop off location, and Frank and his gang head to the Cassidys pub. They turn up with Frank revealing the homemade bomb Fergel was supposed to bring with him.

Just as it looks like everyone is about to start shooting, Helen turns up with the contents of the suitcase that was buried years ago.

The contents of the suitcase are actually love letters between Niamh's mother and Frank's father, who couldn't be together and so kept their love affair a secret. The letters revealed Niamh's mother got pregnant by Frank's father, and so therefore Frank and Niamh are actually half-siblings.

Frank seems genuinely touched and surprised while Niamh wants nothing to do with him, and threatens to shoot Eugene after he stands between Niamh and Helen. While talking to his mother he also reveals it was one of his mother's men who actually killed Donal.

Niamh bursts out of the pub, and Eugene and Helen have a sweet reunion.

How does The Tourist season 2 end?

The episode ends with a six month time jump and sees Eugene and Helen living in Amsterdam with Helen working as a private investigator. While in their new home Eugene reveals a file about his life has been sent to him but he hasn't opened it.

They both agree they don't need to see what's in it and Eugene puts it in the fire. They then head to a concert hall, where Helen tries to get him to show off his ballet skills his mother mentioned in episode one.

As he dances, the scene cuts to the burning file which reveals Eugene Cassidy was a special agent on assignment.

Um, excuse me, but what does this mean exactly? We're going to need a third season immediately to unpack this.

The Tourist season 2 is available on BBC iPlayer now
