About This Item

[History and Historical Evidence - Examples from the Hellenic World in the Modern Times [16th-20th Centuries]

Athens: Papazesses, 2017. In Greek. Soft cover, 24 cm, 308 pp. ISBN: 978-960-02-3313-1.For Christian populations, death is the gateway to the eternal life. According to the Greek Civil Code, the will of a person "is the unilateral act by which the lawyer he/she regulates matters of his succession or certain family relations". However, besides the material possessions, there are cases where one tries to arrange matters of spiritual nature through his/her will. The practice of drafting a will has been widely used in the Western world for a long time; the services of a notary for the legal safeguarding were often considered as necessary for a will. As far as the Greek area is concerned this practice has long been adopted in areas under Latin / Western dominion or influence, such as the Ionian Islands, Crete and the Aegean Islands; however, the same practice was also used in areas under the Ottoman rule. The wills that are discussed in this book come from the Catholic community of Kardiane, Tenos, and belong to the kind of arranging spiritual matters. The inhabitants of the settlement had always been shared between the two religious doctrines (Catholic and Orthodox, the first about 2/3 of the population). Kardiane has long been under the Venetian rule, just like the rest of Tenos island (1390-1715).
