Used makeMKV with 42GB movie and it burned this verbatim bd-r DL disc in 26.5 mins, I saw speeds up to 8.1x using Asus bw-16d1ht inside vantec nexstar DX2 usb3 external enclosure. Get the one I use and it should work 100%Tutorial: use makemkv and select backup and check the box for decrypt these files. Use ImgBurn to burn those folders called bdmv, makemkv, certificate. It preserves all menus , subtitles, etc from the original. It will play on a PS5, which is known to not play burned Blu rays.Flash the stock 3.10 firmware with a cross patched firmware called 3.10 MK, makemkv than recognizes that libredrive is available and that microcode is enabled.*update - I bought this external case beginning of April 2023, it's now middle of Sept 2023, so about 5 months, its held up quite nice, I've ripped through 121 DVD's and 70 Blu rays with e burner and this case. The case has held up well. I did have a failure of the Asus bw-16d1ht which died pretty quick, the 2nd Asus bw-16d1ht I got has been holding okay so far however I've had to disconnect it and reconnect it a few times , it appears like it just stops being recognized possibly due to overheating. It could be because the case has not enough air flow and the drive is naturally hot, dunno. I did have to find a guy on the makemkv forum, his guide is called "Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated 2023", and his username is Billycar11, he makes custom flashers to enable libredrive/ microcode. The second Asus bw-16d1ht had a much more recent manufacture date which can explain why it was more reliable but would not allow me to use the 3.10 MK firmware, so Billy had to make me a custom flasher, very strange and cool , it executed using .BAT files which I haven't seen since the early years of windows. cost was like $25 but he used some strange payment app called Zelle. it updated asus to 3.11. if this drive dies he recommended pioneer drives. from reading amazon reviews the internal ones are more reliable, blly also has a list of specific models as well. oh also the delta power supply still works well

Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2023
Pattern Name: 50GBStyle: 25 Pack SpindleVerified Purchase
I've used the Verbatim BD-R 50GB discs frequently for a couple years. They are quite reliable.

There is an alternative “Verbatim” 50GB BD-R disc sourced from Japan. It's an all-white, printable disc that you will find on Amazon and other sites. They are temptingly priced at about half the cost of the Verbatim discs you see on this page. I bought a spindle of 100 discs on the bay and many were defective. After translating comments from Asian posters at Amazon, I see others found the same visually obvious problem: white smudges on the outer rim of the discs reflecting lousy quality control. The “verbatim” brand name was evidently licensed by a less assiduous manufacturer in Japan. The manufacturer part numbers for these turkeys: VBR260RP100SV1, VBR260YP50V1

No brand of media is perfectly reliable. From burning discs of various types for 20 years I’ve learned to burn at the slowest available speed. The time investment is worth it because the output has less immediate and long term failures. With Blu-ray, I’ve never seen burning problems with 25 GB, single layer format. The 50 GB, dual layer format fails occasionally even with best quality, Verbatim media.

Always use “Verify” mode with your burning software – some errors are not detected during writing, but appear later on reading.

I’ve used some of the budget brands of blu-ray media and they worked fine, but I’ve only tried budget brands with single layer 25 GB, and then only a small sample size. The test of a media brand comes with the more problematic dual layer format.

It takes a lot of experience to figure out whether an annoying failure rate is coming from hardware, software or media. I expect there are many good software burning packages. I suspected that the burner within my DVDFab suite was a factor in producing errors with 50 GB discs. I tried Cyberlink’s Power2Go burning software and it cut down my coaster rate sharply. Power2Go is the most reliable software I’ve ever used, better even than the venerable ImgBurn freeware standard. I highly recommend Power2Go.

I’ve used two quality external blu-ray burning drives, plus a low cost external drive. If you want top reliability with frequent use you must fork-out for the best external drive from ASUS or Buffalo. Any configuration of hardware/software/media has worked acceptably for me with 25 GB discs. For 50 GB I’ve found the Buffalo drive to be slightly more reliable than ASUS. More controlled, extensive testing would be needed to be definitive.
edit: I see pioneer has just come out with an internal BD burner. A lot of people swear by that brand. Perhaps there are good internal drive options beyond what I've tested.

    This concludes my TED talk.

I love tape backup, but the drives are really expensive. Blurays are getting cheaper and cheaper. Plus, in a fireproof safe you don't need a faraday cage/bag. I have a cheap 6x LG Blueray Burner. The blurays burned with no problem. With the 6x burner, it takes about 2 hours to burn 25gb of data. I know there are cheaper Blurays. But, this data was very important. Reading reviews on the cheaper Blu rays, they don't always burn and you get errors. I didn't want to take the chance. On each burn of these discs, I took the extra time to perform a complete verification of the burn data. Absolutely no errors. With no errors and importance of this data, the little extra cost was well worth it.

Optical media is quickly going away, but at $3.50 per 50Gb of longevity - it’s still the best archive media. I do a lot of 4k videos, and these are great for archiving the raw cuts. So far, I have only burned one without any error. I tried the cheap-o generics, and they make great drink coasters because they don’t verify. I’ve learned, you need to get brand name because you can loose a lot of data using generic blanks.

Use to create discs of movies I have created and every one I have made functions perfectly. Not one bad disc so far and have made more than 10.

Funcionan perfectamente. Ya he usado la mitad y las grabaciones se han verificado correctamente en los discos.

5.0 out of 5 stars After many failed 50GB DL discs with RiTek, these Verbatim 50GB DL discs are perfect so far!

UPDATE: Burned the whole spindle - only 1 coaster. Will be buying these again. I was a tad annoyed that the second I bought this the price jumped up over $40 and has been slowly coming down the past year since I purchased these. Not sure why Amazon does this. BUT, these are GREAT disks and if you read below you will see my concerns about a previous brand I used to use but NOW... I will only be buying Verbatim DL media. Also, after emailing Verbatum on the type of disks used LTH or HTL they are the GOOD ones not the lower cost ones. Verbatim emailed me back mentioning that for many years they have only used the better method of making their blurays. So, that makes me happy.

    STORY ON MY MEDIA ADVENTURES:

I have burned about 5,000 RiTek bluray disks and never had problems in the PAST. Keep that word in mind... in the PAST. Prior to 2020 I have purchased nothing but RiTek but my last 2-3 cases I purchased in late 2019... every single disc was a coaster. On the layer change the burn would fail verify. I even bought a NEW LG burner. Still had problems with the RiTek. I even upgraded my burning software from AShampoo Burning Studio to the latest version. Still a pile of bad 50GB expensive coasters. So, I even bought a high end Pioneer Bluray burner and still had nothing but coasters. Ended up digging around and it seems to be a problem with most RiTek around the end of 2019 onward.

I bought these Verbatim DL's for the first time... and so far! NO coasters! Perfect first burn!

So, It's what I thought. A whole bunch of bad (RiData) discs went out around the end of 2019. You used to be able to read the stories of people who bought 5 packs of 25 spending hundreds of dollars on RiTek (off Amazon) and ending up with nothing but coasters.

After spending so much money on new drives, software, etc I figured... what is one last expense!??! I mean.. it COULD have been Windows 10. Some of their software changes deep in the OS have caused other programs to not work. But, all my 25GB RiTeks I have remaining from prior to 2019 all work fine. BUT, going forward... I'll only be buying Verbatim disks.

I may even try 100Gb blanks although that's a lot of data on 1 disk... so, maybe 50GB is good enough for me. LOL! :)

Also, RiTek... I have thousands here all perfectly burned over the past 20 years.. from cd's, to dvd's, to blurays to bluray DL... all perfect. Maybe 1 coaster per 200 disks. But, I have here 2 brand new RiTek 50GB DL bluray blanks... ALL coasters.

So, I would stay away from RiTek. Also, last time I checked, those selling RiTek disks... started up a NEW page for the bluray DL's which means all those thousands of bad reviews are now gone.

So, let's hope RiTek figures out what went wrong and fixes it one day. But, once I have a good brand.. I tend to stay with that brand... and Verbatium is the first good BD-R DL I have burned in 2 years. So, going to stick with them. A lot of stuff I burn, I can't lose down the road. I have a 42U 500TB server. About 20TB is personal data. The rest is projects for my business and other stuff. I have backups on other drives, but, some data, I like on disk.

Happy to be able to burn 50GB disks again :)
