Fantastic filter media to be used as a settlement media, like a pre filter.
I have the Fluval FX4 filter and I use this in the very base edges of the bucket. No media is meant to go in there but this is the area where water flows first therefore it catches the largest of detritus and prevents the foams from becoming clogged up so quickly.

Highly recommended.
I would suggest this is better than the plastic stuff.
However, do remember that this is smooth ceramic it does not serve as bio media at all and should be used in conjunction with bio media also.

It help to break up the incoming water stream and evenly distribute the water up through the rest of the filter. One box is easily enough for a couple standard filters.
