Light scattered foxing throughout, corner of one plate restored, unaffecting impression. xii, 551pp. London, Longmans, Sir Henry Holland, first baronet (1788?1873), was born at Knutsford, Cheshire. After a education in medicine at Edinburgh and two years residency at Guy's & St Thomas', Holland in 1810 began indulging his adventurous spirit with an expedition to Iceland, ostensibly to research his doctoral thesis. Following his graduation, Holland spent eighteen months travelling in Portugal, Gibraltar, Sardinia, Sicily, the Ionian Isles, and Greece. This book constitutes an account of the eastern part of this journey. The publication was a great success, and it ?provided him with an entrée to London society which would be of great benefit in a medical career which he determined would allow him to devote two months of every year to travel. In 1814 he again visited Europe, this time as medical attendant to the princess of Wales (later Queen Caroline). He was subsequently asked to testify at the inquiry of 1820 which sought the necessary evidence to divorce her from George IV.? (ODNB). Seller Inventory # 221122
