MINI FISHES

BeckyCrew/Scientific American

The smallest of all the miniature fish in the world is Paedocypris progenetica [A, B]—the smallest specimen ever found was 7.9 mm long. Recently, researchers found a new species of miniature, transparent fish [C] in the highly acidic Rio Negro, in Brazil. At 17 millimetres long, the bluebelly night wanderer (Cyanogaster noctivaga) won’t break any record, but given its unusual mouth and teeth, it deserved a new genus.
