This popular sedge is an excellent low ground cover. Carex oshimensis ‘Evergold’ has brilliant yellow variegation, making it a bright accent for shady gardens. Evergold blends with broad-leaved plants and makes a great edging for walkways and paths. It also creates a charming display when allowed to flow over rock walls or when planted beside stone steps. It makes a great container plant, too, serving as both “filler” and “spiller.” This sedge keeps its color throughout the year in milder climates. Carex oshimensis ‘Evergold’ grows best in shade to part shade, but it is durable and adaptable, and will grow in sun in cool climates. Evergold Sedge can tolerate drought once established. Likes well-drained soil.

- Growth rate: slow-medium
- Grow in 1 or 2-gallon containers
- Grow in well-drained soil; good drainage is important
- Water needs: keep evenly moist; may be moist-dry but not bone dry
- Fertilizing: use a slow release, low-medium rate fertilizer; very sensitive to over fertilization
- Possible pests: aphids, Bactra venosa caterpillar; anthracnose; fungus gnat larvae; Rhizoctonia is possible
- Overwintering: cold frame with clear poly, keep dry
- Slow to grow back after being cut back
- Good air circulation and spacing will reduce fungal problems
