Max Payne Voice Veteran James McCaffrey Passed Away

James McCaffrey who gained cult status by lending his voice to the character in Remedy’s popular three-game series, breathed his last on Sunday, December 17th, 2023. The veteran actor of 30 years was suffering from an incurable form of bone marrow cancer called multiple myeloma. At the time of his death, McCaffrey was surrounded by close friends and family including his wife Rochelle Bostrom and daughter Tiernan.

The Max Payne actor was a popular figure among his peers as well. Addressing McCaffrey as his best friend, actor Kevin Dillon took to his Instagram account to express his sorrow on his demise. The actor was also remembered by showmaker Dick Wolf, with whom he collaborated with first in Swift Justice. A statement by a representative that was published on the TMZ website read as follows.

“One of Dick Wolf’s proteges, McCaffrey went on to a successful 35-year career in television and film. Trained at the Actor’s Studio, he never lost his love for creating characters.”

Fans of Remedy’s video game series Max Payne and Alan Wake 2 will surely feel the loss of a unique and recognizable voice in James McCaffrey. The celebrity though, is known for far more in front of the camera over a 30-year career.

James McCaffrey’s Expertise Extends Beyond Max Payne

Deceased actor and voice artist James McCaffrey is known for much more than his gaming gig. While the celebrity became synonymous with the voices of Max Payne and Alex Casey in two of Remedy’s most popular video game series, he put in the hard yards years before in various television and film projects. McCaffrey’s breakthrough role came in the police drama New York Undercover in which he appeared significantly in Season 3 as Captain Arthur O’Byrne.

The Alan Wake 2 actor’s marquee gig came on FX’s Rescue Me in 2004. In the show that spanned 7 seasons, McCaffrey played a firefighter who died tragically in the September 11th attacks. While he appeared as a main character in the first three seasons, he was seen in a recurring role in the final seasons of the show. The actor has also starred in the 90s NBC series Viper, which was seen as a pioneering sci-fi effort at the time.

In an effort to give every genre a go, McCaffrey entered daytime television in popular soaps like As The World Turns.
