Description
A varied day is waiting for you
Spinalonga has a varied and eventful history. The small island is located in the beautiful bay of Mirabello. First it was a pirate base, later a Venetian fortress, then a Turkish settlement and finally a leper colony. Its residents lived in complete isolation due to the high risk of infection. They formed a village community on the island with a complete infrastructure. There was a school, grocery stores and even a tavern. After the discovery of the vaccine serum, the isolation was lifted, whereby the last residents left the island in 1957.
The short crossing to Spinalonga starts in small fishing boats from the chic, small town of Elounda. During the guided tour of the island you will receive interesting information about its fascinating history.
Afterwards you have the opportunity to enjoy the crystal clear water directly from the boat (depending on the weather).
You have the opportunity to have lunch in Elounda.
In the afternoon you will visit the small, vibrant town of Agios Nikolaos - the Cretan St. Tropez. Right next to the harbor - only separated by a small bridge - is the freshwater lake Voulismeni. According to mythology, the goddess Athena is said to have bathed here.
After a little free time to stroll, the journey takes you to an olive oil factory. Visit the modern facility and taste the “liquid gold”, which you can also purchase there.
A great day for young and old!
