Aulonocara jacobfreibergi (Eureka/Albino Eureka Red)

The fish pictured above is not a goldifsh!! He was THE BEST specimen of any fish species I have ever kept. Aulonocara jacobfreibergi (Eureka/Albino Eureka Red), commonly referred to Eureka Reds and Albino Eureka Reds (AER), are a species of peacock. The male above was my prized AER male when he was only  3″. This species of peacock is not found in Lake Malawi. The Eureka Red strain of peacocks is selectively line bred from the species of jacobfreibergi found at Otter Point in Lake Malawi. It is unknown if the albino form of Eureka Reds is a hybrid or not; the albino gene is extremely rare in peacocks.

I obtained my prized male when he was only 1.25″ as seen at the right. Even at that size, his fins were extremely long and his color was incredible. As he grew, his color just got better.  The orange darkened and became more red, and his body filled in, like the picture above. The best males of this species exhibit fins that run the length of the entire body and have color that fills the entire body, showing little white.

I had my male for 3 years until he died suddenly one day. But in those three years, he helped produced hundreds of fry for me, and I grew out several males to see if any turned out as good as him. Only once did I get a male that rivaled my male in coloration and finnage, pictured below.

Like other peacock species, AERs are peaceful fish. They do not show agression towards males of the same species. Larger tanks can have several fully colored males. AER females are better looking that ordinary peacock males, have a white/peach type coloration, with better ones sporting a light orange coloration. If you want a peacock tank without any drab looking females AERs are the way to go!!

If you are interested in keeping a breeding group, you can do so in a 40g tank with 1 male and several females. I recommend a tank at least 3′ in length to give females room to get away from the male when he is showing breeding behavior. Once the male begins to show signs of breeding, females can breed as small as 1.25″, and will breed often.

One thing to note when purchasing this species is to make sure you purchase a high quality strain. There are several strains out there that have poor coloration and finnage, so make sure to do your research carefully. If you are purchasing males, ask for pictures of the exact fish you are getting. Google images of males to better understand the difference between a good an bad strain of AERs.

A good male AER is one of the most vibrant and elegant peacock species in the hobby. The long fins and bright red coloration are noticeable from afar. They are NOT goldfish!!
