Summary[edit]

Description

Originally a bicycle manufacturer, Singer built it's first four wheel car in 1905. In 1956 Singer was taken over by the Rootes Group. The last Singer rolled of the production line in 1970, when the Rootes Group was taken over by the Chrysler Corporation. The Singer Gazelle Saloon and Convertible was built in England from 1956-67 and was a sportier version of the Hillman Minx. The nose of the car featured that traditional Singer grille. The 1957 Series II got an overdrive, an Estate now available. The 1958 Series IIA 56hp SOHC engine replaced the 49hp OHV. Later in 1958, the Series III; better seats and arm rest 1959 Series IIIA gained small tail fins, larger windscreen, twin carb 1960 Series IIIB; back to single carb 1961 Series IIIC; larger 53hp 1592cc, convertible and estate dropped 1963 Series V; body update rear window no longer wraps around. 1965 Series VI, new front end styling, larger 1725cc engine. 1967-70 Series VII, now Rootes Arrow / Hunter shape

The Singer Gazelle was also produced in Australia from 1957 to 1961 by Rootes Australia. Following the merge with Chrysler Australia, the Gazelle was then called a Hillman Gazelle. Unique to the Australian built cars were the alloy head motor from the Sunbeam Rapier whereas the English Singer Gazelle has the cast iron head.
