Around 1898 French architect and furniture designer Hector Guimard created this chair for Castel Béranger, a new apartment building in Paris. Guimard is acclaimed the most representative French artist for the Art Nouveau style. The above chair can now be viewed in Musée d’Orsay .

Elements and Principles

Line is the Element, and Movement is the Principle of this design. Typical for Art Nouveau style, many lines are directed and intertwined to give this exquisite piece the feel of dynamic movement.
