The wet refugee of Paliki
White herns fishing in shallow waters, visitant birds which stop to rest, swans swimming gracefully and eucalyptuses smelling great describe Paliki. Instead of taking the ferry from Argostoli to Lixouri take the vehicular route passing by Livadi valley in the peninsula of Paliki. The marshy areas are an important biotope with rich vegetation and a refugee for several bird species which pass by the Ionian islands every spring and autumn. More than a hundred streams have Paliki as their final destination. The calm scenery was once admired by the prisoners of the agricultural prisons that were operating at the beginning of the 20th century. Only deserted buildings have remained from that time.
